Franz Mayer Traumann was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1882 in a traditional German family from Jewish roots. He came to Mexico in 1905 where he established himself as an independent stock market broker. Franz Mayer was an active character in the financial world who directly participated in the creation of the Mexican Stock Exchange. His intense financial activity allowed him to make an important fortune and network that was useful in his collector work.
To Franz Mayer, collecting art was much more than a hobby, it was an intellectual endeavor where the selection of objects had to be carefully made and supported by the opinion of experts. The collection attests to the interest that he had toward specific works of art, certain techniques, and periods, influenced by the tastes of that time and the books he read.
